Position Summary: Each of the eight units has approximately 60 campers and 15 staff managed by a director and two assistant directors. Unit Assistant Directors are responsible for the day-to-day operations of their unit in cooperation with the Unit Director, who will assign tasks as necessary.
Essential Job Functions:
- Create a close-knit community that feels like family through thoughtful and deliberate leadership, planning, and preparation.
- Provide a safe, fun, and cohesive environment for both campers and staff.
- Know each and every staff member and camper by name.
- Develop the staff, create opportunities for leadership and to grow and learn together.
- The assistant director, along with the unit director, is responsible for each camper’s experience while at camp. Each camper needs to feel safe, learn about themselves and others, and have a fun and memorable summer.
- Have clear expectations for counseling staff concerning behavior, leadership, and how to do their job.
- Lead weekly staff meetings covering camper concerns, upcoming events, reminders for staff, etc.
- The overall unity of campers and staff is dependent upon the Unit Director/Assistant Director(s).
- Assist with the weekly schedule for campers and staff.
- Keep track of how many campers will be at each meal for the kitchen.
- Keep accurate records of patches that campers have earned.
- Coordinate laundry days for campers’ clothing and commercial laundry, including drop off and pick up at laundry room.
- Unit cleanliness is very important. Maintain a clean lodge and high expectations for cleanliness.
- Review, proofread, and correct camper reports that are sent home weekly.
- Make appropriate contact home to parents.
- One AD will communicate regularly with nurses regarding camper incidents, illness, medications, etc.
- One AD will oversee and coordinate the CILT (Campers in Leadership Training) program with the CILT Coordinator.
- Be flexible when working with the other seven units, various programming schedules, etc.
- Provide exceptional experience in management and leadership.
- Communicate any camper/staff concerns to the Unit Director and keep him/her updated on the needs and current functioning of the unit.
- Work with the Unit Director to establish what needs to be accomplished in the unit and what areas the assistant directors will be responsible for overseeing.
- As a member of the leadership team at Cheley, the expectations for conduct and behavior are very high. At different times throughout the summer you may be asked to help the community in a manner other than what is described here.
Position Requirements

Experience: Must have experience with children, leadership and management, and large group presentations.
Required Certifications: CPR.
Required Skills: Must be at least 21 years old. Must be organized, empathetic, a strong leader and passionate about youth development.
Preferred Skills: Experience teaching, parenting, or in management.
Physical Requirements: Must possess the visual and auditory ability to assess any unsafe environment or hazard also the physical ability to respond appropriately to situations.

- Give immediate feedback to staff (when appropriate); complete 2 evaluations on each counselor over the summer.
- Communicate with the Boys’/Girls’ Camp Director any camper or staff concerns and keep him/her up to date on the needs and functions of the unit.
- Work with the Assistant Director(s) to ensure a high level of camp functioning and provide feedback and growth opportunities.
- As a member of the leadership team, expectations for conduct and behavior are very high. At different times throughout the summer you may be asked to help the community in a manner other than what is described here. This will not conflict with the duties listed above.

Camp Watitoh, located in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts, is seeking an experienced Dramatic Arts/ Theater student or graduate who is interested in expanding their experience directing children’s theater.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, producing two musical productions, one for campers ages 7-11 and one for campers ages 12-16 and implementing hour-long drama classes doing improv games and other drama-type exercises. Applicants will be choosing the musicals, editing scripts, casting, choreography and blocking, costumes, and sets. The program is designed to create productions that will allow campers to thrive on stage in an environment where we are boosting self-confidence and allowing campers to try new things. Some campers will be skilled at singing, dancing, and acting while others will be novice. Relocation to the Berkshire Mountains (Western Massachusetts) from mid-June to mid-August. Salary, room, and board is included along with a travel stipend. The applicant should want to be part of something more than the theater as there will be responsibilities outside of the drama program to support the camp community. Camp Watitoh, located in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts, is seeking a Cooking Director!
The Cooking Director is responsible for preparing age- and gender-appropriate cooking lesson plans that demonstrate a progression of learning while motivating and engaging campers and staff. This role includes maintaining the activity area, ensuring equipment upkeep, managing purchasing and maintenance needs, and keeping the area organized and presentable. The director will also oversee intercamps as needed and communicate effectively with program leaders, Head Counselors, Program Directors, and Assistant Directors. A key aspect of this position is fostering creativity and fun within the cooking program, acting as a role model for other staff both on and off duty. The Cooking Director will supervise specialists to enhance program potential by creating lesson plans and generating new ideas, while providing constructive feedback. Attendance at the Morning Huddle, supporting Head Counselors, and maintaining inventory throughout the season are essential duties, along with formal and informal check-ins with the Program and Assistant Directors. The director will actively participate in the Watitoh community, take on OD responsibilities such as Rover, Driver, and Trip Leader, and always maintain a helpful attitude, creating special moments that go above and beyond for the campers.

Camp Watitoh, located in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts, is seeking a Waterfront Director!
The Waterfront Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and smooth running of the waterfront, including managing and directing a team of 12-14 waterfront staff. This role includes conducting waterfront orientation and ensuring all staff adhere to safety protocols and standards set by the ACA, Massachusetts, and CampGroup. The director will provide both formal and informal feedback to staff and address any issues related to waterfront safety. Additionally, the Waterfront Director serves as the head official for all waterfront activities during special events such as Sports-A-Rama, Color War, and British Empire/Pan Am Day. Responsibilities also include implementing Waiter/TIC lifeguard training, organizing rainy day programming, and scheduling waterfront staff and swim groups.

The Athletics Director will oversee our comprehensive sports program, including team sports, archery, gymnastics, dance, and fitness. This role involves developing sports instruction and lesson plans, managing equipment, and coordinating logistics for intercamp games, including rosters, coaches, uniforms, lunches, medications, and allergies. The director will be responsible for scheduling the Sport-a-Rama, organizing hobby selections in sports, and serving as the head official for major events such as Pan Am/British Empire Days, Sports-a-Rama, and Color War. Additional responsibilities include running lineups, coordinating activities for Red, White, and Blue Day, and creating the Color War packet. The Athletics Director will collaborate with the Head Counselor on evening activities for Boys Camp, oversee coordination of golf and horseback riding, assist with the Carnival, and provide coverage for the Program Director during their day off.
