Position Summary: Each of the eight units has approximately 60 campers and 15 staff managed by a director and two assistant directors. Unit Assistant Directors are responsible for the day-to-day operations of their unit in cooperation with the Unit Director, who will assign tasks as necessary.
Essential Job Functions:
- Create a close-knit community that feels like family through thoughtful and deliberate leadership, planning, and preparation.
- Provide a safe, fun, and cohesive environment for both campers and staff.
- Know each and every staff member and camper by name.
- Develop the staff, create opportunities for leadership and to grow and learn together.
- The assistant director, along with the unit director, is responsible for each camper’s experience while at camp. Each camper needs to feel safe, learn about themselves and others, and have a fun and memorable summer.
- Have clear expectations for counseling staff concerning behavior, leadership, and how to do their job.
- Lead weekly staff meetings covering camper concerns, upcoming events, reminders for staff, etc.
- The overall unity of campers and staff is dependent upon the Unit Director/Assistant Director(s).
- Assist with the weekly schedule for campers and staff.
- Keep track of how many campers will be at each meal for the kitchen.
- Keep accurate records of patches that campers have earned.
- Coordinate laundry days for campers’ clothing and commercial laundry, including drop off and pick up at laundry room.
- Unit cleanliness is very important. Maintain a clean lodge and high expectations for cleanliness.
- Review, proofread, and correct camper reports that are sent home weekly.
- Make appropriate contact home to parents.
- One AD will communicate regularly with nurses regarding camper incidents, illness, medications, etc.
- One AD will oversee and coordinate the CILT (Campers in Leadership Training) program with the CILT Coordinator.
- Be flexible when working with the other seven units, various programming schedules, etc.
- Provide exceptional experience in management and leadership.
- Communicate any camper/staff concerns to the Unit Director and keep him/her updated on the needs and current functioning of the unit.
- Work with the Unit Director to establish what needs to be accomplished in the unit and what areas the assistant directors will be responsible for overseeing.
- As a member of the leadership team at Cheley, the expectations for conduct and behavior are very high. At different times throughout the summer you may be asked to help the community in a manner other than what is described here.
Position Requirements
Education: Not limited.
Experience: Must have experience with children, leadership and management, and large group presentations.
Required Certifications: CPR.
Required Skills: Must be at least 21 years old. Must be organized, empathetic, a strong leader and passionate about youth development.
Preferred Skills: Experience teaching, parenting, or in management.
Physical Requirements: Must possess the visual and auditory ability to assess any unsafe environment or hazard also the physical ability to respond appropriately to situations.
